The meeting
started on almost on time as Sarah, our Sergeant-at-Arms, was kept really busy
with lots of guests arriving at the door.
Pat, the
president, welcomed members and guests to the meeting and introduced Paddy, who
was Toastmaster for the evening. It was
his first time and he did very well being entertaining and witty at the same
time. The Eurovision Song contest could
be his next event.
Paddy
introduced the officers for the meeting but he forgot the scribe person.
Me! Jenny, our grammarian, announced the
word for the evening: inexorable, it was
only used once.
Pat started
the prepared speeches with an educational speech on “Impromptu Speaking”, we
gained some very valuable tips and information on how to speak better, when you
don’t know what question you may be asked next. It was very interesting and
Majella, our Topics Master, then tested him by asking him a question.
Majella
continued the topics session after his speech and her range of topics varied
from: suggestions for date nights,
evening classes during the winter and talking about teachers.
Formal
speeches continued by Frank, Liam, Ruairi and Rob. What a great evening with wonderful speeches.
From how to declare your taxes, to “life on the gerbil wheel” and learning how
to burn fat in “your heart, your head and you” by Ruairi to “Yes, I can” by
Rob, which was such an inspirational speech.
After the
tea break (we have hippie tea bags too) Martin took over as General Evaluators
and called on Sarah, Doireann, Liam and Pat to give their verdicts on the
various speeches.
The creative
corner was completed by Donal reading out a poem called “Time”, short and sweet
it lasted one minute.
The meeting
was closed by Pat, who explained that our next meeting is a competition night
and will be held in the Maldron Hotel.
