The number 10, purple old ladies and nose picking 3 year olds!

The second meeting of the Galway Toastmasters was held in the Maldron Hotel on the 6th of September .

The chosen word of the night was 'Discombobulate' which means to confuse or disconcert someone.

The President, Pat, opened the meeting with Frank acting as Toastmaster and Mike as Topicsmaster.  Frank then introduced the auxiliary roles held for the evening as Ah-Counter - Jenny , Grammarian- Dara, Timekeeper - Martin,  Scribe - Michelle, General Evaluator - Darragh and in the Creative Corner - Della.

Mike selected an eclectic mix of topics for the night which included:

  • Do you believe in star signs? ....only if they're good!
  • What makes me smile? ....honest people
  • Worst movie you have ever seen? ....apparently Dunkirk is highly recommended for a successful date 😁!!
  • What is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for you? ....do my speech for me!
  • Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?....yes, when trying to beat someone to the shopping checkout....or when beeping a driver in front to hurry up in order to beat the red light!!
  • What makes you proud? .... when my 3year old who can wipe his own nose!!
  • Two weeks and lots of money where would you choose to go? ....Jamaica for those influenced by the movie Cool Runnings!!

Eamonn was first out the gate of all the new members and gave his first speech entitled 'The No. 10'. Eamonn gave a very insightful Icebreaker speech of the significance of the number 10 and its meaning to him, as it reoccurred in his life and in its representation of the number 10 jersey. 'Do more so we can be more, so we can get more, so we can give more'.

Liam provided an entertaining and humorous speech entitled ' The Accidental Gaffer', conjuring up paradoxical images of 'flashbacks in his mind like a prodigy video' and ' diving all around the place like a choirboy'  with revenge best being served in the form of a colonoscopy by the person you irked on the field!

This set the tone for the dramatic scenery conveyed by Frances as a family struggled to survive a capsized boat in stormy seas.

Following the nice tea break, with biscuits and Kit-kats, the evaluators Declan, Pat and Margaret provided positive and constructive feedback to the speakers.

Completing the night Della  delivered a delightful poem called 'Warning' by Jenny Joseph about a woman envisioning what she will do when she is an old woman 'pick flowers in other people's gardens and learn to spit'. An inspiration and reminder to us all to let go of the conformities of life every once in a while.

That's a rap folks, hopefully you are not too discombobulated and are looking forward to our next meeting which will be in the Menlo hotel on Wednesday the 20th of September.
