Our toastmasters meeting was opened as usual by our president
Sarah with a few words of wisdom. You don’t have to be great to get started but
you have to get started to be great. She then passed over to our
toastmaster for the night, Darragh!
Darragh opened with optimism and introduced the members with
jobs for the night. Including our Ah-counter, timekeeper, scribe, creative
corner and grammarian, Pat, with the word for the night ‘unexpected’. We
try to include this word in our talks during the meeting. Later, in an
unusual turn and to make our meeting more interesting, our second grammarian
Annmarie introduced the word ‘discombobulation’. Incredibly a couple of
members took up the challenge and worked both words into their talks. Lots of
laughs and a few giggles along the way!
Then on to our Topics master for the night Frances. Starting with ‘Do you get tied up in Black Friday’. This included the opinion that black Friday is an excuse to shop and having a more positive name change to Fantastic Friday would be a better option, encouraging us to do something good on that day. Moving on to ‘Is winter your favourite time of year’. Some said yes that swimming in the sea this time of year is just great, the comradery and the crack along with the crisp air in the changing rooms were the best. And ‘yes’ there were also alternative opinions like sitting around a warm fire. Other topics were ‘Do you like to have cash to spend’, ‘Would you eat insects?’ and ‘Which is a better spectator sport, soccer or rugby?’
Then on to our four prepared speeches, two of which were
icebreakers from Cormac and Eugene, and two from experienced members Declan and
Martin. Very well delivered and very informative with something for everyone!
Tea break and then back with our evaluations on the speeches,
giving great feedback and something to work on for their next speech.
Our creative corner was a short story called “Stage craft” by
Jamie, which brought a very enjoyable evening to an end!
Looking forward to our next meeting Wednesday 5th
December in Menlo Park Hotel at 8.30pm, all are welcome!
