14th September 2022 - Education, Habits & Dragons

"Reflective thinking turns experience into insight."

John C. Maxwell

On-Line Meeting

President Pat Coakley welcomed members to our second meeting of this new toastmasters season which was on-line due to the unavailability of the hotel.

Our Toastmaster, Jenny, then introduced the evening’s role holders.

The Topics Masters Avril and Martin forwarded a varied range of topics to challenge the attendees. Topics ranging from highlights or lowlights of summer holidays, animal preferences, to our rationale for joining toastmasters. On a more serious note views were sought on present provisions for special needs students, on our present education system and on why are educational degrees are so highly valued. There were many add-ons following the initial presentations.

This evening speeches were brought to use by Luke and Pat whose topics and delivery captivated all members in attendance.

Luke spoke about the difficulty of breaking habits as he described how the absence of alcohol was making such a positive impact on his life.  His speech was enriched by references to Greek and modern philosophers and classical writers.

Pat’s speech entitled ‘Here Be the Dragon’ gave pause for reflection as we were asked to imaging the world in 2080 and shared with us his thoughts on how our education system should be focusing on how to learn, giving young people an appetite to learn. Young people today need to be educated about how to navigate this ever changing modern world.

The General Evaluator, Martin, outlined the importance of evaluation and introduced the evaluation session and as is custom he then evaluated the evaluators

Creative corner was brought to us by Ivica  who shared and entertained us with us a poem about chess.

The Ah Counter gave a comprehensive report regarding our habits with gap fillers and highlighted some of the nice phrases used by the contributors throughout the evening.

The Grammarian reported on the use of ‘Litany’ of which there were a litany of usage.

The rolls for the following meeting were filled and the meeting went off line following another entertaining and reflective evening.
