We’re Back

This was our first meeting back following the summer break and it was wonderful to see so many old and new faces at the meeting.  Our new President, Paul, began the meeting by welcoming everyone and introducing the new committee for this year.
Our Toastmaster for the night was Frank who, as an experienced Toastmaster, ensured the meeting ran smoothly.  We were introduced to the Officers for the evening and the word of the night, ‘capricious’, was revealed. The topics session is always a lively affair and the Topicsmaster, Astrid certainly ensured that tonight was no different. We had a huge variety of topics including; ‘your favourite subject at school’, ‘would you eat a burger with cabbage on it?’ and ‘do you hide your age?’ which generated a lot of debate!!!
We then moved on to the prepared speeches.  We had a wide range of both stages and topics for our speeches, which always makes for an especially enjoyable meeting.  Martin gave a Stage 2 speech on learning how to play the tin whistle as an adult and treated us to a quick tune (and a rock god was born!!).  Mary gave a very heartfelt and thought provoking Stage 4 speech, telling the story of walking the Camino De Santiago and how we all have times when we have to ask for and accept the help of others.
Changing topics completely, Pat gave an ATM Silver speech on the merging of technology to create new technology, moving from the past to the present and the possibilities for such ‘Convergence’ into the future.  Finally Mike, also giving an ATM Silver speech, went into crisis management mode following an oil leak into Galway bay, (many members of the press were present, including somewhat surprisingly, a journalist from ‘Hello’ magazine!!!)
After the speeches the tea break gave everyone the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and chat to some of the many guests who attended the meeting.  Each of the speeches were then evaluated and some valuable feedback given, not only for the individual speakers but for everyone present.  All the officers of the evening were invited to give their reports and the creative corner was prepared by Joseph, a summary of the meeting was given by the General Evaluator Pat and our President brought the evening to a conclusion.

Looking forward to next time!!!
