Our meeting on 9th November was well attended
with a mix of members and guests. As our club President was unavoidably absent
the meeting was opened by Martin, our Toastmaster for the evening. He welcomed
us all and set out the programme for the evening and introduced the officers
for the evening. He then handed over to our Topicsmaster Liam.
The Topics session covered a wide variety of topics from
what kind of drink would Donald Trump be, how the polling got it so wrong, what
kind of houses our four main political leaders would live in, favourite
childhood games and the type of TV programme we would like to see made. Many
members used the opportunity to speak for the first time at a meeting and were
very impressive.
We had three formal speeches. The first from Doireann
focused on vocal variety and dealt with the trials and tribulations of minding
a three year old child. This was followed by Donal with a speech on Ireland’s
Housing Crisis which was very topical. He also answered questions from the
audience which he achieved successfully. Our final speech was from Margaret and
dealt with the experience of modern travel and why the old days may not have
been that bad.
After our break we had speech evaluations. This section was
led by our General Evaluator Ann with Sarah, Mike and Frances evaluating the
speeches. They gave much positive feedback with a suggestion for the speakers
to work on in their future speeches.
We then had our feedback from our Ah-Counter for the night,
Tim, and from our Grammarian, Ellen, who had had the temerity to introduce the
word “temerity” as our word for the night at the start of the night.
Following a general evaluation of the meeting by Ann she handed back to Martin who closed the meeting by thanking members and guests for participating in a wonderful evening.
