March 19th meeting was competition night for Galway Toastmasters club with the International Speech competition followed by the Evaluation competition.
Pat C opened the International Speech competition with a speech with the intriguing title of ‘Is the pleural of spouse spice?’ In it he explored the nuances of marriage structures across cultures and traditions ranging from monogamy, polygamy and a whole variety of others which enlightened us as to both terminology and complex marriage combinations out there. Humour abounded with this.
Paul took us on an adventure with him and his two best mates on a Rawene adventure to New Zealand where we were brought to the remote farmhouse where they aimed to spend some time working for keep. Humour at the adventures was admixed excellently with the sobering life event where his friend heard one evening of the sudden death of her dad back home.
For the Evaluation Competition Pat O’D (delivering the Test speech)arrived to the lectern in his green irish jersey expounding the pathway by which Brian O Driscoll gradually earned his place over time from rugby player of general acclaim to someone Pat acquired a huge admiration and respect for. Again humour was very much the mood of this great test speech which then challenged Tony, Pat (another Pat) and Emer to individually deliver constructive evaluations and recommendations.
Acknowledgement of the achievement of all competitors was well deserved, but there must be a winner and so it is the Galway Club will be represented at both International Speech competition and evaluation competition at Area level by Pat C and Pat C (The Pats certainly had the night..).
